Floral Rescues
Everyday
Heroes to the Rescue
As customer service in most business segments becomes less personalized, one-on-one
attention remains the stock and trade of the floral business. The personal touch
that florists deliver is a hot commodity among flower buyers, especially at times
that demand grace under fire. The Society of American Florists conducted a survey
of Gourmet magazine readers and invited respondents to share personal anecdotes
about flowers and florists. And, according to the readers accolades, florists
often pull off the impossible -- rolling up their sleeves and showing up as everyday
heroes.
- Take, for example, the case of the forgotten prom date corsage and the florist
who came to the rescue. When a tuxedoed teen from Franklin, Michigan, discovered
his mistake on the way to picking up his date, he found a florist to answer
his last-minute call for help. A new corsage was prepared, picked up and presented
to his date as if nothing had gone awry and set the tone for a wonderful
evening. Recalls the teens Mom, True story. Talk about the kindness
of strangers. I will always be grateful."
- Another reader in Bronxville, New York, related how his florists ingenuity
put the finishing touches on a huge family reunion. "The logistics were
overwhelming. At the last minute, we needed 15 arrangements and our budget
was already strained," explains the host. "Our florist was terrific.
She asked if we had any small baskets. We did. And in a very short time she
filled them with the most extraordinary arrangements. All 70 guests commented
on how lovely they were. Our florist made a special family reunion even more
special."
- A new bride from Encino, California, described how her florist came to the
rescue when she discovered that her wedding site was under construction. She
says, "One of the reasons we chose to be married at the country club
was the beautiful paneled room where the ceremony would take place. The night
of the rehearsal, we found the panel replaced by unfinished drywall. I was
devastated. The next day, I called my florist. He turned the eyesore into
a magical setting. Everyone said the flowers were the most magnificent and
original that they had ever seen at a wedding."
- From a grandmother in Holbrook, Arizona, this story of a birthday rescue:
"I had forgotten my granddaughters 14th birthday. In a panic I
called the florist and asked to have 14 dollar bills put in an arrangement
to send to her. She loved it. They saved the day!"
- Another flower fan from Miami Lakes, Florida, values her florist for working
wonders: "My florist conducts an interview to determine your likes, your
room décor and what you need. Some people have a personal trainer;
I have a personal florist."
- An interior decorator from Dallas, Texas, tells of her florists creativity
that helped her land a job: "I was bidding on an important commercial
project. My florist folded my written bid into origami and put it into a floral
arrangement to make it stand out. I won the job."
- A last-minute hostess in North Falmouth, Massachusetts, confessed: "A
florist shop came through for me on Christmas Eve. About 15 minutes before
closing I asked if theyd make an arrangement for our Christmas dinner
table. To my amazement, they said, Sure
and whipped up a
beautiful centerpiece."
- From a birthday celebrant in Ann Arbor, Michigan, came a story about an
unusual gift created by her florist: "I was having trouble with squirrels
digging up my flower beds. Well, my birthday was coming and when my husband
ordered flowers he mentioned the squirrel problem. So our florist found some
fake squirrels and put them in the arrangement. They were adorable and I had
a good laugh!"
