Zygocactus

 


Common names:  zygocactus, Christmas cactus

Description:  Named for its blooming season, these cacti have individual stem joints that are 1 to 1½ inches long. Satiny, many-petaled flowers hang from pendulous branches, making them lovely blooming plants. Colors include lavender, purple, pink, red and white. They grow 1 to 1½ feet high.

Special care:  These blooming plants thrive in bright indirect light. Night temperatures should be no lower than 55 F/13 C. Keep the soil evenly moistened, and fertilize every two weeks while flowering. Keep humidity levels medium to high. Watch for wilt diseases and spider mites.
